Overview

Har Ki Dun, the 'Valley of Gods', is a cradle-shaped hanging valley deep inside the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. The trail winds through some of the oldest inhabited villages in the Himalaya, ancient deodar forests and wide alpine meadows, all beneath the twin peaks of Swargarohini — said in legend to be the Pandavas' stairway to heaven. It is one of the rare treks that rewards you in almost every season.

Highlights

  • Walk through centuries-old Garhwali villages like Osla
  • Mythical views of the Swargarohini peaks
  • Lush meadows, deodar forest and the Supin river
  • Beautiful in spring blooms, monsoon green and winter snow

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Dehradun → Sankri

Set off early for the long, scenic drive to Sankri, winding past the Mussoorie ridge, Kempty Falls and the Tons river valley. Settle into this charming wooden base village (6,400 ft) by evening and rest up for the trail ahead.

  2. 2

    Sankri → Taluka → Cheludgad

A short drive to Taluka, where the trek begins on foot along the gurgling Supin river. Walk through dense pine and deodar forest, crossing little streams, to the peaceful riverside camp at Cheludgad.

  3. 3

    Cheludgad → Osla

Follow the river upstream past terraced fields and wooden bridges to the ancient village of Osla. Its tightly clustered houses and intricately carved wooden temple are among the oldest in the Himalaya.

  4. 4

Osla → Har Ki Dun → back

The highlight day — climb gently into the cradle-shaped Valley of Gods, with the twin peaks of Swargarohini towering ahead. Soak in the meadows and glacial views before returning to camp near Osla.

  5. 5

    Osla → Cheludgad

Retrace your steps down the valley, descending along the Supin as the forest opens to wide river views. An easy, relaxed day with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery back to Cheludgad.

  6. 6

    Cheludgad → Taluka → Sankri

Trek out through the forest to Taluka one last time, then drive back to Sankri. Unwind in the village with a warm meal and a comfortable night's rest.

  7. 7

    Sankri → Dehradun

After breakfast, begin the long return drive to Dehradun through the Garhwal hills. Arrive by evening with a head full of mountain memories.
