Overview

The Sar Pass trek is a much-loved Himachal classic that packs dense pine forests, flower-strewn meadows and snowfields into a single, varied trail above the Parvati Valley. Named for a small frozen lake ('sar') near the top, the crossing is famous for its exhilarating glissade — a long, natural snow-slide down the far side. It's the perfect step up for trekkers ready for their first taste of a high pass.

Highlights

  • The famous snow-slide (glissade) descent off the pass
  • Varied trail: pine forest, meadows and high snowfields
  • Charming traditional village of Grahan
  • Big views over the Parvati and Tosh valleys

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Kasol → Grahan

From the riverside town of Kasol, trek up through pine forest and along the Grahan stream to the remote, traditional village of Grahan. Settle in among its old wooden houses for the night.

  2. 2

    Grahan → Min Thach

A steady climb out of the village through forest that opens onto the grassy shoulder of Min Thach. Camp on the meadow with sweeping views back down the valley.

  3. 3

    Min Thach → Nagaru

A demanding ascent through the treeline to the high, exposed campsite at Nagaru. The air thins and the first big snowfields and ridge views appear.

  4. 4

Nagaru → Sar Pass → Biskeri Thach

The big day — climb to the 13,800 ft Sar Pass past its frozen lake, then enjoy the thrilling natural snow-slide down the far side. Continue to camp on the beautiful Biskeri Thach meadow.

  5. 5

Biskeri Thach → Barshaini → Kasol

A long descent through forest and apple orchards to the roadhead at Barshaini. Drive back to Kasol, arriving by afternoon.
